Love with a Twist of Eco

The season of love is fast approaching! I'm focusing on eco-friendly love themed items this week to get everyone in the love zone!

Perhaps it's cliche, but hearts and jewelry are one of the first things a lot of people think of when considering V-day gifts. Why not put an eco-spin on these items? Here are examples where artists did just that!

The Body Scrub to Die for...

Helena's Organic Botanical Shop offers the yummiest (I'm sorry, there's just no other word for it) body scrub ever! I purchased her "Organic Fine Sea Salt and Botanical Body Scrub with Mowrah Butter" (yes, it's a mouthful), and had sweet almond oil and coffee grinds added to it. After my first use I came out of the shower smelling like some heavenly mix of coffee and vanilla and found my skin to be fabulously moisturized!

This scrub is perfect for this time of year especially, where I usually come out of a hot shower feeling like a dried up prune with the lack of humidity in the air. This scrub exfoliates and does my moisturizing for me! No need to take an extra 10 minutes to apply some stinky and sticky moisturizer all over. If you haven't figured it out already, I can't say enough good things about this shop! I think the best part is that there are a ton of natural and organic ingredients in this scrub, and its prepared by hand! It's well worth the cost, and I'm totally going back for more, as soon as I need a refill!

Oooh, try out Helena's lip balms too! I purchased a lemon/blueberry blend and it's quite delicious. Hope you derive as much pleasure from her shop as I have!

Eco Dispenser

Oooh, these soap dispensers made of recycled glass by BreadandBadger (of Portland, Oregon) are so pretty! And aside from their recycled nature, the earth also benefits because you no longer have to purchase those plastic soap dispensers that get a one-time use, are flimsy and bendable, and then need to be recycled (which is just extra energy expenditure that is unnecessary). And let's face it, these dispensers are just flat out good looking...

Take it Off

Take it all off (your makeup that is) with washable and reusable makeup removal pads by EcoKate!

These can be dotted with some olive oil diluted in water, and will take your makeup right off! (I say this from experience.)

These are also great for just exfoliating. A more natural way to do that is to dab baking soda that's been saturated with water onto a pad and scrub away. It's good to re-moisturize after this process if your face is feeling dry.

A Soapy Situation

This soapy goodness is handmade by InseineCreations (pronounced "In-sane"), who has a very focused and inspiring view point behind the soaps she makes and sells:
I became interested in body products after I realized a lot of products contain ingredients that only dry out your skin, and therefore make you use more of their product, rather than pampering the skin and moisturizing it. It's a vicious cycle! My goal is for my customers not only to be able to pronounce all of the ingredients in my products, but to understand what they are and what they do. I only use cosmetic grade ingredients in my products, and use of animal products is limited (goat's milk and beeswax in some items). All products are tested on ME, my family, and my close friends before being offered to the public.

This shop's got my heart!

Roll Up Your Makeup

itssewyou8 made this cute makeup brush and tools organizer from some beautiful reclaimed fabric. I need one of these BAD. Right now my makeup tools are kind of all over the place, and require an annoying amount of digging, cursing, and fist shaking before I can find what I'm looking for...

All About the Bath

This week I'm focusing on eco-friendly crafty finds that you can use in and for bathroom purposes.

I'm starting it off with a biggie, in my book. The washable and reusable feminine menstrual pad. I am a big advocate for these, and therefore a big user of them. I love the cloth pad options for sale by NaturallyHip especially. They're very decently priced, and come in a lot of cute colors and patterns.

Reactions I've gotten from people in my life that know I use cloth pads are that they're somehow gross, unsanitary etc. That's an incorrect and narrow point of view that completely disregards the benefits of these cloths, to the earth, to my body, and to my wallet. If you care an ounce for the amount of waste you're contributing to our landfills alone, you'll consider cloth pads, and get over the negative reaction people sometimes have towards them. They're way more comfortable than pads made of plastic, and work wonderfully to absorb.

When you're done with one, you throw it in a container of water (I add some eco-friendly detergent and baking soda in the water with them) and let soak for a few hours to separate everything that was absorbed back out of the pad. You can then hand or machine wash these pads and air or machine dry em! I've been using mine for over a year now and they're all in great shape. They just keep on goin!

Go Green Teens!

This week I'm on the lookout for eco-friendly finds that eco-conscious teens can really dig...

I'm starting this theme off with this adorable pendant with a green message. Aside from the wording, this pendant is "green" in the following ways:

• Graphic Image decoupaged onto reclaimed Scrabble tile
• Non-toxic glaze for a glass-like finish

A Move & a Sale

I'm moving my ShutterKate shop to a new location...(typed drum roll)... KnitStorm.com!

I plan on migrating the items in ShutterKate over to Knitstorm in the next month. To speed up the move, I'm offering 20% off of any item at ShutterKate.com from now until the shop is completely empty and migrated! Take advantage of this great offer! To get your 20% off, leave a note to buyer during check out that says "Moving Sale" and wait to receive a revised invoice from me via email before you make your payment... If you have any questions on this process, you can email me with them.

Why the move?? Well for one, it was too much to have both shops open at once. I need one shop to focus all of my efforts on. And while ShutterKate is perhaps better known right now, I feel like KnitStorm better represents the items I sell by the name alone, and so I have no qualms with promoting KnitStorm.com like crazy!

So make sure you check out KnitStorm.com, heart it and tell all your friends about it too!
